Buddy, You Stink! (Professional Equipment Washing)

Everyone has one (or more) players on their team that get some extra dressing room or bench space for no other reason except the blatantly obvious – their gear STINKS! Newsflash, your gear isn’t supposed to smell like hot garbage!

If your gear smells rotten, there’s a pretty good chance that it’s crawling with bacteria, microorganisms and similar funk. Some of these bacteria, such as MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) are actually quite dangerous and resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections. No one wants to wind up in hospital (and miss part of their season) because they caught something nasty from their equipment!

“But Doc, we just toss our equipment in the washing machine at home! Why would we pay to get it professionally washed?”… Yeah, we know parents and players do this all the time, but unfortunately, your home washing machine may not be doing your equipment any favours  Residential grade washing machines and detergents may not be properly killing the bugs living in your gear. Our commercial grade machines, temperatures, detergents and processes remove up to 99.99% of the nastiness you can’t see. Plus, ask any appliance repairperson, sporting equipment in a residential washing machine can actually cause damage, unbalance or increased wear on components! Mom and Dad (or your better half) won’t be too happy to hear you nuked the washing machine with your old, rotten gear!

Our partner's professional equipment washing service uses a controlled, wet wash process to clean your equipment. They hang all items to dry naturally, as to not expose your equipment to any unnecessary heat, stress or wear in the drying process. They can wash all hockey-related items, including helmets and goalie masks, except for your skates and bags with wheels. Please Contact Us or drop by the pro shop to obtain a Partner Referral Card for equipment washing.

Do yourself (and your teammates) a favor and get your equipment washed. Drop off your gear before you go camping or on holidays and it will be smelling fresh, clean and ready for next season by the time you return.

Once your gear is smelling good and fresh again, be sure to maintain it to keep it that way. Always take your gear completely out of your bag and hang it to dry after each use. Don't just open up your bag - it needs to taken out and hung to breathe and dry properly. Invest in some deodorizing spray designed for sports equipment (or even a bottle of anti-bacterial Febreze, Lysol or similar). Frequently wash jerseys and socks, and ensure your under-gear is washed after each use. Freshen up your mouthguard using denture cleaning tablets or a soak in mouthwash between use. It’s just that easy to avoid being "that guy" on your team!
